strategic Research-Driven Writing
(nonprofits)

Writing and research created in close collaboration with nonprofit organizations on social and ethical issues. Projects center on clear, responsible narrative-building for fundraising, education, and advocacy, where language carries real consequence.

Parent to Parent — People-First Language

Nonprofit educational writing sample.

Excerpt 1

People-first language puts the individual before the diagnosis. Rather than defining someone by a condition, it emphasizes personhood first—recognizing that disability is only one part of a much larger human identity. Language that labels people as “the disabled” or suggests they “suffer from” a condition quietly reinforces distance and hierarchy, even when no harm is intended. Over time, these patterns shape how individuals are perceived, treated, and how they come to understand themselves.

Excerpt 2

The main message here is that the words that we use carry more weight than we may sometimes think, which is why it is so important to be mindful of the words we choose to use. When we choose our words, we should always think about the feelings associated with those words, and how they may make another person feel.

Testimonial From Project Manager:

"If you have a chance to work with Carmen, you should seize it! His exceptional expertise in research and writing shone brightly as he took on a copywriting project for our organization. Carmen embarked on a topic that can be sensitive, navigating it with grace and precision. His ability to clarify our needs and offer valuable suggestions ensured that the project was headed in the right direction from the outset. His commitment to excellence was evident as he delved into independent research. The result of his hard work was a high-quality article that addresses a critical issue with sensitivity and depth, and will become a powerful tool to further inclusion. We can’t wait to share his piece with a broader audience."

Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance — Giving Tuesday E-Blasts

Nonprofit campaign copywriting.

Excerpt 3

This Giving Tuesday is about more than a single donation—it’s about choosing the kind of community we want to live in. When policies fail to reflect the values of dignity, fairness, and moral responsibility, real people feel the consequences. Your support allows us to continue advocating for systems that serve the many, not the few, and to ensure that those most affected by injustice are never excluded from the conversation.

Excerpt 4

Every contribution strengthens our ability to show up—at council meetings, in policy discussions, and alongside community members whose voices are too often ignored. Giving today is not an abstract gesture. It is a concrete investment in accountability, transparency, and justice where it matters most.

Testimonial From Project Manager:

"Carmen helped our organization tremendously with his incredible writing skills! We were able to shave a lot of time off our prep for our end of year fundraising campaigns as our Executive Director was preparing for leave. His help was truly invaluable."

Strange Inc. — Storytelling + Organizational Writing

Narrative strategy and messaging.

Excerpt 5 (Storytelling Project)

It was too apparent to us that the story of the modern Muslim woman had been fed for too long by offensive, biased storytelling media… We have felt as though we have too long been spoken for, inhibited… these words of others have become wide purveying beliefs that are not based in reality. These turbulent words affect how we see ourselves and our power to be ourselves.
Excerpt 6 (Donor Letter Project)
It has been a wonderful year, a most constructive year, in large part because of your altruism. We have published a book, hosted national poetry slams for the youth, created campaigns to bring awareness to social justice issues, begun a bi-monthly writing show on Youtube, Instagram and major podcast platforms, facilitated writing coaching courses…
Testimonial From Project Manager:
"Carmen understood our vision and he wrote it in a story so eloquently. He is a very talented writer and works with excellence in the projects (we’ve done more than one) that we have collaborated in. So grateful for his help and wish him all the best."

Project Context

  • Brought in by nonprofit teams with strong values but no clear language to express them, often working from urgency rather than a finished draft.

  • Built trust quickly, clarifying intent and translating complex social issues into writing that could move audiences without flattening nuance.

  • Produced donor communications, Giving Tuesday campaigns, and long-form educational pieces on inclusive language and organizational storytelling.

  • Grounded projects in research to ensure accuracy, responsibility, and care when addressing sensitive topics.

  • Delivered language that aligned with each organization’s mission and could be used publicly with confidence.

  • Several pieces were adopted directly into live campaigns, websites, and outreach efforts, expanding into additional work once trust was established.
